Drinking Water Systems in BC
Public water quality notifications basically fall into 3 categories in Fraser Valley and through-out British Columbia. There are many smaller water well systems through-out the province that are managed by Certified EOCP Water System Operators. There is a requirement for suppliers of water to notify and advise the user connected to the water system if a concern is triggered.
The following information also pertains to privately owned water systems or drilled well water well supplies serving a single property, if any of the following is noted it's advised that the water not be consumed until water tests performed by a certified water laboratory confirms that the water is safe to consume without boiling.

The concerns that can possibly trigger a public water quality advisory may include:
- The presence of a possible pathogenic bacteria in a water sample such as fecal-coli-form or E. coli in tested water sample.
- Possible contamination of a water reservoir.
- A sudden change in water quality is an indicator of a possible contamination issue.
- Water-borne disease experienced by members of a community
- Discovery of back-flow or cross connections within the water system.
- Water treatment or disinfection equipment failure.
- Broken or damaged water main
Notifications and Drinking Water Test Results
Once a drinking water advisory is in place it must not be superseded and will not be lifted until a water quality officer has reviewed further water quality tests and is satisfied that the water is once again safe for public consumption and meets of exceeds the Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines.
A waterborne illness can be very serious and even fatal in extreme cases, whether you are on a public drinking water system in the Fraser Valley or a private water well system the drinking water quality must be taken very seriously.
Shallow wells in the Fraser Valley may be more vulnerable and especially during the wet weather months. The immune systems of the young and elderly many be more easily compromised when consuming possible contaminated water. All private water wells should be tested on a regular basis an safe-guarded from any potential of contamination.
