Mission - Well Drilling Regulations

Step by Step Guide for Drilling a Well in Mission

Step 1: Contact Mission Well Drilling by phone or email .

Step 2: Determine the Mission Well Drilling Location

The next step is to determine the location of the new drilled well. Locating the well is not a difficult process but there are a few items that must be considered.

The BC Ministry of Environment has established Mission Well Drilling Regulations and minimum separation distances between private wells and septic tanks, drain fields, sewer laterals and other sources of possible contamination.

Overhead, underground utilities and trees can affect a well drilling location. Other concerns that enter into the drilling process are the dimensions of the actual drill rig and support vehicles. Our drilling equipment is very large in scale and on-site mobility is sometimes limited, so access to the actual drill site is also a major concern.

Step 3: Site Specific Well Drilling Rig is Dispatched

After the best well drilling location has been determined, a site specific well drilling rig and driller is dispatched depending on the geological formations encountered in the area.

Step 4: Drilling and Installing the Water Well Casing

The actual drilling operation consists of drilling and installing well casing.

Step 5: Cementing or Grouting of the Well Casing

Next the cementing or grouting of the casing takes place to seal the casing into the bedrock and protect it.

Step 6: Developing the New Water Well

Once the adequate depth that will provide you with the required amount of quality water is achieved, the well will be developed to remove all drilling material from the well.

Step 7: Water Well Samples Taken and Tested

Once the well is developed a water sample will be taken and sent in to the lab for testing. The test results will be forwarded to the owner.

Step 8: Vermin Proof Water Well Cap Installed on the Well

After the water sample has been obtained, a vermin proof well cap will be installed on the well. the finished well will consist of six inch casing that extends above ground approximately 12-18 inches.

Mission Well Drilling Regulations and Guidelines

These are just a few of the water well problems that can severely prevent property owners from enjoying the benefits that a quality drilled water well would bring to a property owner.  At the end of the day low quality well drilling is very expensive and often disruptive for many water well owners.

As Guidelines the Mission Well Drilling Regulations improve, skills and well drilling equipment often doesn't.  When a well driller is lacks the ability to pay for skilled trades or operating with inadequate financial backing, it’s the local property owner's needing a drilled well who generally ends up paying a price they did not expect.

Drilling shortcuts, old equipment and poor drilling practices can frequently result in projects completed to a less than satisfactory standard.

Water Well Efficiency

With any well drilling method, the permeability of the formation around the borehole is reduced. For example, in the cable-tool method, compaction and clay smearing occur. With wet-rotary drilling, fluid infiltrates the aquifer and when reverse circulation is used, water laden with fines often obstructs the formation as a vacuum effect occurs around the bit.

Mission Water Well Development

Knowledgeable water well development in Mission is demanding and critical to any quality water well completion to maximize the efficiency of the well by rehabilitating the aquifer after the disruption of the water well drilling and installation process.

Fine particles surrounding the well screen must be removed from the area to increase the permeability of the aquifer, the use of air and our unique surge methods at Mission Well Drilling Services greatly enhance our water well development procedures!

Well Screen Design and Selection

Well Drilling Mission are specialists at water well screen design, the careful selection of a well screen is, without doubt, the most important consideration in producing an efficient water well. A properly selected well screen will be designed to serve two basic purposes: to permit unobstructed entry of clean water free from sediment into the well, and to permit a maximum flow to the formation for development procedures.

Water Well Setback Regulations for Mission

In Mission New Water Wells Should Not Be:

1)  Within a horizontal distance of 3 m (10') of an existing building;
2)  Within a horizontal distance of 30 m (100') of any probable source of contamination or point of waste discharge to the ground, such as a privy vault, cesspool, septic effluent field, manure heap, stable or pig sty; or
3)  Within a horizontal distance of 120 m (400') of any cemetery or dumping ground.

Not all water wells are drilled deep in the Mission area, many wells may be less than 200' in depth, if located near possible sources of contamination a well can become contaminated and possibly cause serious illness.

The regulated BC Ministry of Environment water well set-backs are in place to protect water wells from becoming contaminated from many possible sources.

To locate comparable water well drilling depths in your Mission neighborhood and Ministry of Environment set-backs please refer to all local resources including well drilling reports, resources are available at British Columbia Water Well Search and local community bylaw offices.

Some potential sources of water well contamination include waste discharge to the ground, such as a privy vault (also known as an outhouse or pit toilet), cesspool (“overflow” pits), underground storage tanks, septic tanks an effluent field, stable or pig sty, manure heap, fertilizers and pesticides, runoff from urban areas, a cemetery or landfill sites.

A water well drilled in Mission or any of the surrounding communities should be located on higher ground when possible to protect the well head from normal or seasonal flooding and possible surface drainage.

Shallow wells and deep wells in the Mission area of the Fraser Valley can be vulnerable and should always be located away from surface drainage ditches and other potential sources of contamination.
