Most pages about well drilling in British Columbia costs never show you the real numbers. This one does. Below is our actual 2026 rate card, a real line-item example of an average drilled well, and what drilling typically costs in each region of British Columbia—based on provincial aquifer mapping, current groundwater conditions, and thousands of completed wells.

If your BC rural property is not on municipal water, "dry well" may be the two most dreaded words you'll ever hear as a property owner. There are never guarantees when drilling for water—but there are proven ways to greatly reduce the risk, and knowing the real costs upfront is where it starts.

2026 Groundwater Conditions in BC —Why This Year Is Different

As of February 2026, over 48% of BC's provincial observation wells show below-normal groundwater levels—many at record lows. In the Thompson-Okanagan, that figure is 57.2% as of June 3, 2026, with not a single observation well above normal and many area creeks at the lowest flows ever recorded for the date.

Every well is invoiced based on its actual completed construction and final depth. Estimates are based on typical depths for your area—the ground always has the final say.

Why the surface seal isn't optional: Under BC's Water Sustainability Act and Groundwater Protection Regulation: the annular space around the well casing must be sealed by grouting—pumped from the bottom up to form a continuous, watertight seal. An unsealed annulus is a direct pathway for surface contaminants to enter your aquifer. An unsealed annulus protects your water, stabilizes the well, and is required by law.

​With the typical 2–4 hours of water well development, a realistic average is $26,100–$27,200 + GST. The two numbers that move your cost are the cased footage through overburden and the rock footage below it — everything else is essentially fixed. That's why the per-foot price alone tells you almost nothing, and why the same rate card produces different totals in different regions.

​All ranges exclude GST, the pump system, and mobilization. Mobilization depends on the distance to your property and the number of wells we're drilling in your area — when we schedule multiple wells on one trip, that cost is shared. If you're outside the Fraser Valley, inquire early: getting on the schedule for when the drilling rig is already in your region is the single easiest way to lower your total cost.
Cost to Drill a Well in the Fraser Valley

The Fraser Valley sits over some of BC's most productive aquifers—large river-connected sand and gravel systems mapped at roughly 80% unconsolidated material. Many valley-floor wells are fully completed in overburden; properties on the valley walls and uplands hit bedrock sooner and carry more rock footage.

Current conditions: The South Coast region is the most stable in southern BC—25.5% of observation wells below normal as of June 3, 2026, actually improved from last year. But the stress is local: provincial wells in Chilliwack, Agassiz, and Langley are at or near record lows while wells in Abbotsford and Surrey are currently normal—one Abbotsford well is at its highest level ever recorded. Two wells in the same valley, kilometers apart, one at a record high and one at a record low. That's why your aquifer matters more than your region.

Cost to Drill a Well in the Okanagan

​Okanagan properties split sharply between valley-bottom unconsolidated aquifers and bench/upland properties where crystalline bedrock starts fast. Deep glacial deposits on the benches can mean substantial cased footage before reaching water or rock.

Current conditions: The Okanagan is in serious groundwater decline. Provincial observation wells at Armstrong, Enderby, and Lumby are Much Below Normal (4–8th percentile); wells at Spallumcheen, Lumby, Mission Creek, and Penticton Creek are at Low — the lowest levels ever recorded for the date. Most area creeks are at record-low flows, with much of the region at Drought Level 4–5. Static water levels here are falling, and wells drilled to old water levels are the ones running dry.

Cost to Drill a Well in the Thompson-Okanagan

Thompson properties divide between valley-bottom gravels along the river systems and benchland/upland properties where bedrock dominates. Where your property sits in that landscape matters more to your final invoice than any per-foot rate.

Current conditions: 57.2% of Thompson-Okanagan observation wells are below normal as of June 3, 2026 — up from 41.7% a year earlier, with no wells above normal. Thompson-Nicola wells are among the hardest hit: Westwold at the 5.3rd percentile, Merritt at 9.5%, Knutsford at 7.1%, and a second Merritt well at the lowest level ever recorded. Fishtrap Creek, the Salmon River at Falkland, the Bonaparte below Cache Creek, and the Nicola River are all at record-low flows.

Cost to Drill a Well in the Cariboo

The Cariboo's defining feature is thick glacial till. The plateau's most common aquifer type is confined sand and gravel buried under heavy till cover — productive water, but deeper and harder to predict from the surface than anywhere else in southern BC. Volcanic bedrock plateaus add their own drilling character.

Current conditions: The provincial network is thin in the Cariboo proper, but the nearest observation wells—Prince George and Vanderhoof—are currently normal (44th and 63rd percentiles), and the North Area overall has improved sharply year-over-year. The Cariboo's challenge isn't declining water; it's that 75% of its mapped aquifers are rated moderate productivity, and they sit deep under till. Depth uncertainty, not water scarcity, drives cost here.

Cost to Drill a Well in the Kootenays

​Kootenay drilling is narrow-valley drilling: productive river-connected sand and gravel aquifers on the valley floors, with fractured sedimentary and crystalline bedrock starting fast on the valley walls. The region also carries the highest share of high-vulnerability aquifers of any region on this page — which is exactly why proper well construction and sealing matter most here.

Current conditions: A region of two stories. The East Kootenay is healthy—Cranbrook's sedimentary aquifer at the 80th percentile, Wasa at 89.5%, and Jaffray and Golden normal. The Boundary corridor is the opposite: Grand Forks is below normal, and provincial wells at Beaverdell and Midway at the lowest levels ever recorded for the date.

What is the price of a new water well for BC rural properties

​Additional Well Drilling Costs to Consider

Well development ($550/hr, typically 2–4 hours). Development repairs aquifer damage from drilling and removes fines to improve the hydraulic connection between well and formation. The hours needed are unknown until the well is drilled—budget $1,100–$2,200.

PVC bedrock liner ($10/ft, if required). Some bedrock conditions require a liner in the rock portion. It's on every estimate at zero quantity so there are no surprises if conditions call for it.

Pump system. Drilling gets you a completed well; a pump system makes it a working water supply. Pump, pressure tank, pitless adapter, wiring, and installation typically depend on depth and household demand. See our Fraser Valley Well Pump & Repair services.

Water testing. Test before you drink—see Water Testing.

Low-yield completions. A low-yield well isn't always a failed well—storage systems and proper pump sizing can make modest producers reliable. But it's an added cost and another reason site selection matters.
The Real Risk Isn't the Price Per Foot—It's the Dry Hole

When most people call a driller, the first question is "how much per foot?" It's the wrong first question. The per-foot rate doesn't matter if you drill a dry hole—you'll pay for every foot of it adn still not have water.

You'll likely never spend more money on a product with less upfront information than a water well. The way to change that isn't a cheaper rate; it's better information about your property before the rig arrives: which mapped aquifer you're over, what nearby well records show, and where on your land the odds are best.

​
  1. Wells must be constructed by or under the
    supervision of a qualified well driller registered in BC.
  2. The surface seal/annular grouting requirement (above) is law
    under the Groundwater Protection Regulation.
  3. Well construction must be reported to the province; your
    well receives a Well Tag Number in the GWELLS database.
  4. Domestic use of groundwater doesn't require a license, but
    non-domestic use (irrigation, commercial, multi-home) requires
    a water license under the Water Sustainability Act.
  5. Setback requirements apply to septic systems, property lines,
    ​and contamination sources.

British Columbia Well Drilling FAQ

How much does it cost to drill a well in BC in 2026? Most drilled residential wells in the regions we serve cost between $15,000 and $31,000 + GST for the drilled well itself, before the pump system. The full rate card and real line-item example are above.

​Why can't anyone guarantee the depth or the water? Completed depth, water quality, and water quantity cannot be guaranteed—the geology decides, but you can greatly reduce the risk. Estimates are based on typical area depths; the final invoice reflects actual construction. What can be controlled is where you drill—which is where site selection earns its keep.

Is drilling cheaper in some regions? The rates are the same on average; the geology varies. Cased footage costs more per foot than rock footage, and regions differ in how much of each a typical well needs; that's the entire difference between the regional ranges above.

Are wells getting deeper because of drought? In much of southern BC, yes. With most Thompson-Okanagan observation wells below normal and many at record lows, static water levels are dropping, wells drilled to decades-old water levels are the ones running dry, and new wells are being completed deeper for security.

When is the best time to drill? Late summer and fall are the best times for water well drilling, as these periods are when seasonal low water levels mean your well is proven at the worst time of year, not the best.  We drill for water year-round and often offer a winter rate to keep our drilling crews working through the winter, when drilling conditions are favorable for individual properties. 

Do you charge mobilization outside the Fraser Valley? Mobilization depends on distance and how many wells we're drilling in your area on the same trip. When several wells are scheduled in one region, the mobilization is shared across them, which is why inquiring early, before the rig is in your area, is the easiest way to reduce your cost.

Do I need a permit to drill a well in BC? No permit is needed for a domestic well, but construction must meet GWPR standards, be performed by a registered driller, and be reported to the province.
